Applying for Housing & Waitlist

How long is the waitlist?The waitlist is typically 2–3 years due to the number of families already waiting. At this time, the elderly, 4-bedroom, and Section 8 waitlists are closed.

How do I apply for public housing?Applicants must submit a completed application in person during intake days. Applications may be picked up at GHA, printed from our website, or requested by email, but must be submitted in person.

When can I submit my application in person?Applications are accepted on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Friday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., which are GHA’s designated intake days.

Where can I get an application for public housing?Applications are available:
- At the Gallup Housing Authority (south wall, box labeled “Housing Applications”)
- On our website under the Applications tab

What documents do I need to apply?Applicants must bring original documents for all household members, including:
- Photo ID or Driver’s License
- Birth Certificate(s)
- Social Security Card(s)

How does the application process work?Once a complete application and required documents are submitted during intake, the applicant is placed on the waiting list. When an applicant reaches the top of the list, they will meet with a Housing Specialist for final certification and eligibility determination.

Can I submit my application online?No. Applications are accepted in person only on intake days.

How do I check my place on the waiting list?Call GHA at 505-722-4388 and provide your name and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Does a letter of recommendation move me to the top of the waitlist?No. Letters of recommendation do not affect waitlist placement.
Section 8 Program

How long is the waitlist?TThe application process is similar to public housing; however, GHA is not currently accepting new Section 8 applications.

What is Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher?The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is funded by HUD and helps eligible families afford safe, private housing. Vouchers are administered by local public housing authorities. GHA is not accepting applications at this time.

How long is the waitlist?Yes, GHA operates a Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program. Please contact our office to get additional information on applying for this program.
Rent Payments & Policies

Can I pay rent online or over the phone?No. GHA does not accept online or phone payments. Rent must be paid by money order or cashier’s check only.

Does GHA have a grace period for paying rent?Rent is due on the 1st of each month. There is a 3-day grace period before late fees apply. A late fee is charged on the 5th day.

How much is the late fee?Late fees are 5% of the monthly rent.

Can I request a late payment arrangement?If you experience a financial hardship, you may submit a late payment request form or email the Housing Manager at pearl.reed@galluphousing.com.
Emergency & Rental Assistance

Does GHA provide emergency housing?No. GHA does not provide emergency housing.

Does GHA provide rental assistance?No. GHA does not provide rental assistance.

General Information

What are your office hours?Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Closed daily from 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m. for lunch. -
Where is the Gallup Housing Authority located?GHA is located on South 2nd Street and Debra Drive, across from Sundance Dental.

What is public housing?Public housing consists of housing units owned and operated by local Public Housing Authorities and funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
